Sunday School for All
Ages
Bethany sponsors four Sunday School
classes for children and youth:
Nursery
Teresa Sullivan is our paid nursery attendant, and she lovingly cares for our little ones
until they are able to join the Preschool Class.
Preschool Class
This lively class is offered for children not yet ready for Kindergarten. For some, this
is their very first exposure to God's word! Three mothers rotate in teaching the
"Rock Solid" curriculum to a class of four little sweethearts.
Kindergarten through Second Grade Class
Susan Maples and Jackie Hampton lead this spirited class that focuses on familiarizing
children with basic Christian principles and Bible stories. The enjoyable "One Room
School House" curriculum is used. The hour consists of
story-telling, music, skits, videos, games, crafts and more!
There are ten children currently enrolled.
Third through Fifth Grade Class
Bob Wharen teaches an interactive class of about six third through fifth graders. Weekly
Bible based lessons from the "One Room School House" curriculum are followed.
Mr. Bob leads a well structured yet comfortable class that offers plenty of open
discussion, skits, Bible puzzles and friendship.
Kris Kent is the Children's Sunday School Superintendent as well as Bethany's Children's
Ministry Director.
Please contact her at kentcrew@cox.net with any questions as she is more than willing to
assist you!
Youth Class
Sondra Colbert, Sue Morecock, and Suzanne Sullivan rotate in teaching our vibrant Youth Sunday School
Class, composed of both middle and high school students. There are currently 32 young
people on the roll.
Bethany Church features nine different
adult learning experiences on Sunday morning at 9:45 am. A brief synopsis of each is
presented below:
Mens Bible Class
The Mens Bible Class was organized in 1946 by Mrs. M. T. Harris. Today it is a class
composed of men in their 70s and above and averages 6-7 men in attendance each
Sunday. The class uses the International Bible Lesson series. The class is taught by
two teachers on a rotating basis
and uses a combination of lecture and discussion. They welcome any interested man to visit
their class!
Mary Lotsey Class
The Mary Lotsey Class was organized in 1947 by Mary Lotsey as the Young Adult Womens
Class. Today it averages about seven persons in attendance. The class
members are age 60 and above. The class uses the International Bible Lesson Series.
Four teachers rotate teaching the class, and they
use a combination of lecture and discussion. The Mary Lotsey Class issues a warm
invitation to anyone who would like to join them!
Lacey Martin Fellowship Class
The Fellowship Class was organized in the 1950s and renamed in the 1990s to
honor their beloved teacher, Lacey Martin. The class is composed of both males and
females, varying in age from the 40s to the 80s, with average attendance of
13-15 persons. The class uses the International Bible Lesson Series. Several teachers rotate in teaching the class, and they use
a combination of lecture and discussion. The Fellowship Class has a strong mission
component and participates in a variety of class projects outside of Sunday morning.
We welcome new members with open arms, open minds, and open hearts.
Friendship Class
The Friendship Class was formed in the early 1980s as a spin-off from one of the
larger adult Sunday School classes. The Friendship Class was composed of the younger
adults, mainly young couples with small children. Now those class members have matured,
and some of them even have grandchildren! The class is currently using
the LifeGuide Bible Study as its curriculum. Different class members serve as
facilitators each week and lead the class in discussion of the lesson. The Friendship
Class invites newcomers to join them. They meet in one of the partitioned
classrooms in the fellowship hall.
Faith Class
The Faith Class was formed by Archie Leigh in the 1980s so that young to middle-age
adults might have their own Sunday School class. Today the class is composed of both men
and women of various ages. They average about eight persons in attendance. Alan Harvey is
the current teacher, and the class features both lecture and discussion. The class is
currently using the International Bible Lesson Series. The
Faith Class welcomes newcomers to their class, whether young or old, married or single.
TBD Class
The TBD (to be determined) Class was begun in 1995 by Rev. Braxton Allport.
The class got its name because the curriculum of the class varies according to the
interests of class members. Sometimes the class reviews recent books of theological
interest; sometimes they watch videos featuring liberal perspectives on the Bible and
theological issues. Several TBD class members take turns facilitating
the class discussion. The eight-member class extends a welcome to all who are searching,
whose minds are open to new truths, and who are eager to learn from the most recent
scholarship available.
Journey Class
The Journey Class was organized in 2004 to provide a discussion-oriented, Bible Study
format for Sunday School. The class is currently using the LifeGuide Bible Study, which
explores books of the Bible using a question-and-answer format. The Journey Class is composed of both men and women and
averages 5-6 in attendance. Class members take turns facilitating the class discussion.
We welcome all to come and join us as we continue on our journey to grow closer to
God through reading and studying the Bible and understanding who we are in the Risen
Lord.
Womens Study Class
The Womens Study Class was organized by Loretta Leigh in July 2005 to provide a
Sunday School class for young women. Today the class is comprised of women of all ages and
averages eight in attendance each Sunday. The class often chooses to study
Christian books that relate to the devotional life of women. Our class is open to all women. We have open hearts and minds as we learn more about
Gods will for our lives. Please join us as your heart is led!
AIM Class
The AIM (Adults in Ministry) Sunday School class was organized by Kris Kent in February
2007 to provide a class for younger adults to have an open forum to discuss topics of
current interest from a Christian perspective. The class currently uses FaithLink
curriculum, which is e-mailed to the church each week from our United Methodist Publishing
House. Jonathan Kent facilitates the class, which is open to persons of any age,
gender, or marital status. For further information, please contact Kris Kent, our Director
of Childrens Ministries.
Bernard Robins is our Sunday School Superintendent, and questions can be directed to
him
through our church office.
